Buried

This was essentailly part of our groups inspirations concerning the narrative becuase as suggested by the title of the film it deals with someone being buried, which represents a sense of restriction, and a lack of control, something that we wanted to incorporate within our thriller. In addtion this trailer merely consists of a black screen, and a man talking to the police, and evetually a light appeared showing that he's inside of a box. I liked this concept becuase i felt that it really did help with the way in which we wanted our audience to feel, which was isolated, disorientated and vulnerable, much like the guy in this trailer. In addition i liked the fact that it started in black becuase it caused there to be theatre of mind because the audience had to imagine the situation he was in, and figure out the reasons behind it, which invoked a sense of fear, and confusion, which is something that i wanted to establish within our opening sequence.

Hurtwood House - Presense analysis

This is another key example by Hurtwood the way by which a thriller should be made, overall their concept was orginial, and retained the conventions of a usual thriller while still subverting from the cliche tactics that are evident in many current thriller films. For example, while they retain the concept of the audience actually being capable of relating to the mise en scene, due to the home being the location as well as the recognisable surroundings it disallows the audience from feeling unfamiliar to the locations thus diallowing them to empathise with the narrative as a whole. I think that the subverted the genre becuase of the way in which the character would intorduced, she essentially broke this illusion of a home enviroment due to the fact that she entered through the window, making the audience speculate the possibilties, which is represented through enigma codes, another convention of a thriller.

Another way by which i think they capture the essense of the thriller genre is thourgh the editing, by cross cuttiing with the events concerning the shaking pipes, and the doors closing, I think that it builds up suspense signifcantly becuase once again it raises questions, and begins to grab the audiences tension. Furthermroe by using cross cutting it essentially shows that their's a link between a character and a certain situations. Another technique i liked that they used editing for was by taking two shots, and causing one to be seen in the mirror, I think that essentially would give you an idea of what the film would be about e.g. Supernatural thriller, Legal thriller, Conspiracy thriller etc.

Another thing that i believe was presented well within the openign sequence was the title, while they weren't encoorporated inside the sequence, originally i still think that the titles typography, and colour represented the mood that the entire film tried represent, which was eerie, mysterious and supernatural. I think that as they said in the video, they used Final cut pro to make it look more professional, which i believe is true.

I think that with the lack of soundtrack, actually worked quite well most probabaly due to the fact that there was a lot of other sound such as the sink emptying, doors slamming, pipes shaking, and i think by having such a variety of natural sounds is essentially built up the tensions becuase the sounds varied, and the ones closer to the end of the sequence were louder. In addition i think the contrast of the moments of silence and noises really builds up the suspense, and causes the audience to speculate the possibilities of the narrative.
